Because of the many roles and demands placed upon clergy, burnout is not uncommon in ministry. Often these symptoms manifest through depression, anxiety, stress, relational conflicts, marital challenges, addictions and more. These experiences are detrimental to the clergy member, their families, the congregation, and the church at large. These challenges lead us to ask how the church can foster resiliency and well-being among their clergy who are confronted with
emotional and mental health challenges. The first portion of this project is a survey regarding ways to understand the foregoing concerns. With a better understanding of the problems facing clergy, the question then is how might districts within the Church of the Nazarene constructively respond? Possible solutions and recommendations for more effective support of pastors are considered in the final portion of this dissertation. Various prevention and intervention efforts and approaches are surveyed for the purpose of promoting positive mental health among clergy. These recommendations are the beginning steps of providing on-going support for those who minister.
